Sheryo saiu de Singapura para encher as ruas de Nova York com seus personagens enormes e divertidos. Essa garota já viveu altas experiências na vida e tem muita história para contar. Nesta conversa, ela fala um pouco de como foi parar na capital mundial do graffiti e da mistura cultural que transforma seu trabalho.
Sheryo left Singapure to paint her huge and funny characters all over New York. That girl already lived many experiences and also have a lot of stories to tell. In this conversation, she speaks a bit of how it got in graffiti capital of the world, and how this cultural mix turns her work.
Você nasceu em Singapura, mas vive em Nova York. Como você chegou aos Estados Unidos?
Morei em Singapura durante grande parte da minha vida. Um dia, decidi mudar para o Camboja. Achei que seria ótimo porque é completamente diferente de Singapura e não conhecia ninguém por lá. Foi o lugar perfeito para focar na minha arte. Durante o tempo que estive lá, desenhei muito e aperfeiçoei o meu trabalho.
Conheci Yok, meu namorado e também artista, seis meses depois e nós pintamos nosso primeiro muro em parceria no Camboja. Ele me convidou para morar em Nova York e eu decidi ir com ele.
You are from Singapore and lives in New York. How did you go to United States?
I lived in Singapore most part of my life. One day I decided to move to Cambodia. I thought It would be great because it is totally opposite of Singapore and I didn’t know people there. It was a good place for me to focus in my art and paint. During my time in Cambodia, I painted and drew a lot and improved my work.
I met Yok 6 months later and we painted our first collab wall in Cambodia. So, he invited me to New York and i decided… Why not? Hell Yeah!
Quando você descobriu a street art como plataforma para a sua arte? Como isso aconteceu?
Eu pintei meus primeiros muros em Singapura, mas nunca estava realmente feliz com o resultado. Sempre quis pintar com mais frequência, mas era complicado por causa das rigorosas “leis do graffiti”. Então, entrei numa fase de frustração, trabalhei duro e economizei dinheiro para morar no Camboja. Nesse meio tempo, eu sempre viajava para pintar em outros países.
Quando cheguei em Nova York, parecia uma criança em uma loja de doces. Tantos muros, mas pouco dinheiro e tempo para pintar. Eu vivi completamente sem grana por um tempo, dividia sanduíches com o Yok para comprar as latas de spray e pintar todos os dias. Foi muito difícil por um tempo, mas não tenho arrependimentos e não faria nada diferente.
About street art. When did you discover the walls to paint? How was that?
I painted my first couple of walls in Singapore but I was never really happy with any of them. I had always wanted to paint more but it was really tough because of the strict graffiti laws. So I got really frustrated, worked really hard, saved up some money and decided to move to gritty Cambodia. In between I was also travelling to other countries to paint more walls.
When I got to New York, I was like a kid in a candy shop. Too many walls, but too little time and money for paint. I was really broke for a while and shared sandwiches with the Yok so we could buy paint to paint everyday. It was really tough for a while, but I have no regrets and wouldn’t do it any other way.
Como você descreve a sua relação com a rua? O que te faz usar a cidade como tela para o seu trabalho?
Me sinto livre quando pinto muros. Gosto de ver meu trabalho em grandes proporções. Além disso, é mais divertido do que pintar no estúdio, por exemplo. Eu não sou uma pessoa com muita atenção e pintar na rua é como um truque para mim.
How is your relationship with the streets? What made you use the city as a platform for your work?
I feel really free when i paint walls. I like to see my work big. Plus its way more fun painting in the streets than in the studio. I have a very short attention span and painting outdoors seem to do the trick for me.
Nova York é um dos melhores lugares no mundo para os artistas de rua. Como é a experiência de morar nessa cidade?
Nova York é incrível. Todo mundo está sempre indo e vindo, fazendo algo em que realmente acredita. Adoro os amigos que tenho, eles têm sido solidários e úteis. A cidade toda tem essa imensa e forte energia que é contagiosa. Adoro isso!
New York is one of the better places for graffiti artists in the world. How is the experience of living there?
New York is great! Everyone are always on the get-go and doing something they believe in. I love my friends there, they have been really supportive and helpful. The city has got his amazing tremendous energy that is really infectious. I love it there!
Sobre o seu trabalho autoral. O que te inspira? Como você cria seus personagens?
Viagem e aventura são coisas que me inspiram muito. Não sei explicar como esses personagens surgem realmente, eles acontecem. Às vezes fico surpresa com as coisas que eu desenho. É muito aleatório e pode incluir parcerias com o Yok. Ele tem sido uma grande inspiração para que eu melhore meus desenhos sempre.
And about your personal work? What inspires you? How do you create your characters?
Travel and adventure inspires me a lot. I dont know how these characters really come out… They just happen! Sometimes I am surprised at the things I draw too. They’re pretty random and sometimes are made in a team play with Yok. He has been a huge inspiration for me to get better at painting too.
